Education

I was educated at Rugby School, where I first began digging and became head of the Natural History Society

I then did my National Service in the Army, in the Intelligence Corps. learning Russian at Bodmin and Crail.
I then went on to Oxford where I read Greats at New College.
After Oxford I decided I wanted to go into business so I became a chartered accountant, serving my articles with Smith and Williamson, a small firm in the city of London. While there I joined the Chartered Accountants Student Society of London and found myself editing their magazine, Contra. This went well, so one day I had the bright idea of launching an archaeological magazine, which became Current Archaeology. Luckily I had a wonderful girlfriend who was eager to help me in the venture and became my wife.
On to Marriage and Family
